Binding death benefit nominations (BDBNs) have been an essential tool in estate planning with SMSFs now for many years.

We have seen them attacked in many ways, but none so fundamentally as the recent High Court challenge in Hill v Zuda.

While that may have been resolved for now, there are still many risks with BDBNs. We see many ways BDBNs can go wrong, particularly when not properly integrated with an estate plan.
