Emily Hughes-Johnson

Special Counsel
Emily Hughes-Johnson is a special counsel in our property, planning and environment team, providing specialist legal advice on matters involving medium to large scale property acquisitions and disposals (including comprehensive legal due diligence) and leasing.

Emily has over 20 years’ experience acting for buyers and sellers of property ranging from small commercial premises through to shopping centres, high-rise buildings, industrial sites and complex strata titled properties involving building management statements. She also has extensive experience in strata advisory work.

Emily’s experience also involves the sale and acquisition of businesses, particularly in the area of strata administration business sales. She has advised on transactions involving retail and strata administration businesses in both Queensland and Victoria.

She combines strong negotiation skills with commercial acumen and a focus on aligning parties to achieve the best outcomes for clients.

  • Acting in the sale of commercial and industrial premises, including a $40 million commercial building in Brisbane’s CBD involving comprehensive due diligence, preparation of detailed due diligence reports and management of RFI processes.
  • Acting in the purchase and sale of multiple shopping centres.
  • Acting in the sale of a portfolio of commercial property as part of a disposal process for an Australian bank.
  • Providing advice in respect of the leasing by major anchor tenants such as Harris Farm Markets and Woolworths, including negotiating and drafting of complex fitout agreements and agreements for lease.
  • Acting for institutional clients in respect of their Queensland leasing needs.
  • Providing strata advisory and transaction services, including around 10 years’ work on a 400 plus lot layered progressive development in Queensland acting for the principal scheme body corporate. This involved settlement deeds, variations, assignments, multiple community management statements, and long-term negotiations with developers.
  • Handling management rights sales, term top-ups, new management rights agreements, variations and by-law reviews.
  • Advising on various business sales and acquisitions ranging from retail businesses to strata administration businesses in Queensland and Victoria.
