Five minutes with Graham Roberts

Graham Roberts, partner in our litigation and dispute resolution team, has worked with Cooper Grace Ward for more than 20 years.

Graham Roberts, partner in our litigation and dispute resolution team, has worked with Cooper Grace Ward for more than 20 years. We asked him to tell us in his own words what life at Cooper Grace Ward is like, and a few of his past experiences and favourite things.

1.   What made you decide to become a lawyer?

Not everything is black and white, and I enjoy shades of grey!

2.   How long have you worked at Cooper Grace Ward for and what brought you to that position?

I’ve been a partner at Cooper Grace Ward for almost 20 years, however the time has gone by very quickly.

3.   If you could invite three people for dinner, dead or alive who would they be and why?

Nelson Mandela, Tim Minchin and Princess Diana. The company would be thought provoking, entertaining and sparkling, respectively!

4.   Where’s the best place to go for a drink or dinner after work?

What? Only one choice?

5.   What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Take your holidays.

6.   Do you have any hobbies/interests outside of work?

I ride a road bike, and wear Lycra! It tends to turn heads at the traffic lights.

7.   Complete this sentence: If I wasn’t a lawyer, I would be…

A huge boulder in a New Zealand glacial river… But in all seriousness, from as far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a lawyer.

8.   What do you think will be single biggest issue facing the legal space in Australia in 2017?

I think the biggest challenge lawyers are coming up against is providing clients with certainty. There is a growing need to project manage clients’ matters to deliver timely results on budget.

9.   What do you love about your job?

The unusual legal issues that come across my desk – I quite often say that surely there must be a court decision on this only to find that there are conflicting court decisions enabling you to negotiate a better outcome

10.   Something you might not know about me is that…

I was recently told by a client’s young son that when they met me in real life I looked much older than my photo on the website. Perhaps not a compliment but I suppose it means I look young in photos!
