Annie Smeaton, partner in our workplace relations and safety team, has worked with Cooper Grace Ward for seven years. We asked her to tell us in her own words what life at Cooper Grace Ward is like, and a few things you may not know about her.

1. What made you decide to become a lawyer?

I wanted to make a difference in the world.

2. How long have you worked at Cooper Grace Ward for and what brought you to that position?

I’ve worked at Cooper Grace Ward for 7 years now, and was drawn to the great culture and focus on excellence in legal services.

3. If you could invite three people for dinner, dead or alive, who would they be and why?

Nelson Mandela (no explanation needed), Malala Yousafzai (Pakistani schoolgirl and global advocate for the right for girls to be educated) and Charles Francis Richter an American seismologist and physicist most famous as the creator of the Richter magnitude scale.

4. Do you have any hobbies/interests outside of work?

I have a young family who keep me pretty busy!

5. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Work hard, have integrity and the ability to listen.

6. Complete this sentence: If I weren’t a lawyer, I would be…

A geoscientist studying earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes, or a vet. Quite the dichotomy, I know.

7. What do you think will be single biggest issue facing the legal space in Australia in 2016?

Major changes in the way we deliver and charge for legal services and a lot of unpredictability in terms of demand in the legal market.

8. What do you love about your job?

Building relationships with my clients and working with them to get the results they want.

9. Something you might not know about me is that …

I love science, even though you may have guessed it from my interest in being a geoscientist.
