CGW achieves national ranking as employer of choice for women

Cooper Grace Ward has achieved a national ranking as a 2009 EOWA Employer of Choice for Women. This citation from the Australian Government’s Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) is only awarded to a small number of businesses across the country each year.

Cooper Grace Ward has achieved a national ranking as a 2009 EOWA Employer of Choice for Women. This citation from the Australian Government’s Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) is only awarded to a small number of businesses across the country each year.

The award acknowledges women-friendly, non-government organisations with Equal Opportunity programs that recognise and advance their female workforce and the 2009 list features organisations including Allianz, Boral, Credit Union Australia, Westpac Banking Corporation, Rio Tinto Alcan and UnitingCare Health.

Cooper Grace Ward managing partner Chris Ward said he was very pleased with the outcome which stems from a real and tangible commitment to living the organisation’s values and embedding a culture that is both people and performance focused.

“More than 70% of the Cooper Grace Ward team is female and with percentages like these, keeping good female talent and continuously finding ways to support and advance our female team members will be critical to the firm’s long term success,” he said. “However, it is not so much a narrow focus on women that has led to this success but a broader desire to genuinely look after our people – to treat them as individuals who have different aspirations and needs. “We have a variety of flexible working practices in place with more than 25% of our team, which helps them to manage the competing priorities in their lives, including family, study, social and sporting commitments.”

The EOWA citation is not the only evidence of Cooper Grace Ward’s progress in attracting and retaining talent. On 11 March 2009, the firm was named as Best Australian Law Firm (revenue of less than $50m) in the BRW Client Choice Awards. In 2008, the firm was also rated as one of Queensland’s top 100 private businesses and ranked as one of the “Fast 10” law firms in Australasia in terms of growth and profile.

To accommodate continued growth, Cooper Grace Ward will be moving to the new A-grade commercial building at 400 George Street in Brisbane’s CBD in late 2009. The firm will take 4300 square metres of space in the Five Star Green Star rated building, compared to its existing 2900 square metre tenancy in Eagle Street, Brisbane.

Cooper Grace Ward HR Director Neil Baker said this move provides new opportunities to develop a working environment which supports the cultural landscape the firm is creating. “The move to 400 George allows us to build on our current growth and take advantage of the current economic environment to attract additional talent to Cooper Grace Ward to expand our service offering,” he said.
